La Zeppa, Freemans Bay - Restaurant Review
We gave La Zeppa a 5 Star review in 2006. Since then it’s fair to say that it lost its mojo. Does the addition of a new outdoor area put some life back into this once great bar?
Food
It’s all about the small plates, with a fantastic selection of options covering every taste. We went for black olive and oregano polenta chip with blue cheese aioli. These were beautifully crispy and really quite something. The seared tuna with grapefruit, sesame and wasabi crème fraiche was fantastically done as well, and we devoured the lamb meatballs with roast tomato and tapenade. Only the calamari disappointed a little, more soggy than crispy.
Drinks
La Zeppa has a pretty standard wine list but with lots of popular favourites (The Ned Sav being a great affordable option). They have Kirin on tap as well, which is always a good sign.
Vibe
It’s the same old La Zeppa initially with the various segmented areas of wide open space. However, what used to be a tiny balcony is now a fantastic deck. I’ve been three times at different times of the day and night and it’s been super busy every time. A fantastic addition, and one which is sure to be a premium summer afternoon spot.
Service
Good in general, though as with some other bars (
BCC ) the staff can come across as a bit too cool for school. Smiles are nice, guys!
Highlights
Those polenta chips – A.DDIC.TIVE.
The Bottom Line
Happy to say that after a lull, La Zeppa has dusted itself down and is well on its way to returning to its former glory. The addition of the new deck has really perked this place up, and the food is fun, nicely varied and conducive to the social atmosphere. Can’t wait for summer.
