Graham Reid's review of Gyoza King restaurant is out of date and is so off the mark it's a fiction. Several things Reid gets totally wrong include:
1. He indicates that the menu is small and that there are almost no vegetarian options. While veg options aren't bounteous, he fails to mention that there are in fact, 4 or 5 dishes for us vegies.
2. He suggests that their Gyoza aren't particularly tasty or good. Considering that this establishment is THE specialist Gyoza maker (and wholesaler to most other restaurants supplying Gyoza in NZ), I would suggest he make a return visit for another tasting. These Gyozas are simply delicious.
3. He also suggests that it's only good for a snack. In fact, Gyoza Restaurant is styled like a Japanese tapas, where you can mix and match a number of small plates. I have found that 2 people sharing, say, 6 different plates can get an exceptionally filling, variety-filled and still very economical meal.
4. Reid writes that the wine list is expensive. I would invite any would-be customers to compare the wine prices with those of SPQR just over the road. Gyoza's wine prices are VERY good. Their selection isn't huge, but their bar manager selects a good range of very nicely priced wines.
Gyoza King isn't just an ordinary bar/restaurant. It's a place where you can sit at the bar - even if you're flying solo - and be made to feel welcome and comfy. It's one of those rare oases in Ponsonby of a 'community-style' bar. The bar manager is an expert cocktail maker, and you'll find her expertise at classic cocktails (and the very good price of same) will delight.
