Freida Margolis, Grey Lynn - Bar Review

Formerly the corner location of West Lynn Organic Meats – look for the retro signage out the front – Freida Margolis now channels a cool bar in the backstreets of a sleepy Latin American neighbourhood. An eclectic soundtrack is kept at conversation-friendly levels, and a loyal band of West Lynn regulars has quickly adopted the bar as their local.

Friendly and welcoming from the chatty one man band owner/operator. Ask him about the life-well-lived story of Freida Margolis, a woman he met during his time in Bogota, Colombia.

Drinks List

Tap beer from the mighty Garage Project micro-brewery in Wellington – try the super-hoppy Angry Peaches if it’s available - and a concise and well-priced winelist (glasses from $8) with Kiwi and Australian varietals joined by a few Spanish visitors. Bottled beer ranges from Tuatara’s best to Moritz from Barcelona, and eight years of living in South America also ensures one of Auckland’s best caipirinhas is available.

Feeling Peckish?

A small blackboard menu showcases interesting bar snacks ranging from chicken fez ($9.50), a spicy Moroccan-influenced dish, to sourdough toast with a zingy pomegranate and olive oil dip ($8). Bring a friend along for the Freida Platter ($25).

A Reason To Return

To see what new brews the crafty Wellington wizards at Garage Project have dreamed up, and for the occasional spontaneous spin on the piano from the well-travelled owner.

The Bottom Line

With an ever-changing mix of Kiwi craft beer, well priced wine and killer cocktails, the laidback and personal Latin style of Freida Margolis is one of Auckland’s best new small bars.
