There is no mistaking that Family is a gay bar. From the rainbow lights across the door to the 10 foot tall crossdressers having a smoke outside, it's pretty obvious. The thing that's not obvious is how well it suits it's name. The place is friendly and keen to allow anyone and everyone to have a good time. The music is good, the drinks are cheap and there's a STAGE! Any attention seeker (gay, straight or otherwise) will have a blast at Family. A guaranteed fun night out!
I would give 4 out of 5. the 1 star is missing because the musics are same every weekend.Family has been successfully running nearly 5 years and I had met good people there and even being closed to them.Also my partner too:) I reckon they should change the musics recently,I understand the gay things about gay musics,but I do relise after hours of dancing with the same musics,it just made my night miss something I supposed.Overall! Cheers Family Bar! Keep it up!!<3
Super atmosphere! Fabulous frocks - you saucy gals know who you are!! The best night out I've had since leaving the UK years ago. It was the first time my man had more glad-eyes in his direction than me and it was a welcome change to have no sleazy, sweaty paws trying to grab a feel or pulling out the crap one-liners. As a lass I felt safe, happy and comfy; to the point of having to be dragged from the dancefloor! Nice work guys... I'll see you again!
Recently I returned from Otago for the University holidays. Having spent most of my holidays at the family bach in the coromandel since i left school i havent experienced too much of the auckland nightlife apart from the main viaduct.
I had a family dinner and so my mates said to meet them at family on K rd. No worries. We were meeting at 10 and by the time i was two beers deep it was 1030.
It was a bit of a shock when I realised it was a gay bar, not an establishment I would normally ever go to. In all fairness, despite not having a speights in site, the drinks tasted good and everyone there was having a boomer of a night. It was a cool set up and the barmen were really friendly.
I cant say I spent too much longer at the bar when I realised my mates were taking the piss out of me but credit where credit is due, it was a friendly place to have a couple of drinks. Cheers Boys!
Where do i start! Such an amazing place to go and dance the night away. I went with a friend and felt completely comfortable in what was a really fun venue. The bar staff were really nice and it was a neat crowd who were just looking for a fun time.
It was quite refreshing not having to brush all those hands away!

I am a regular user of family bar ,At first i enjoyed it.Have met lovely people.Staff bar have been amazing looking after me.
I do like the new look but i am concerned of the repeated music through out the night.That all i would complain about the bar .I love my dancing but dancing to the same music does get a bit boring.I feel lot of regulars are to shy to speak up.Some dj's do make an effort they know who they are and that is appreciated.Thats why it has now lost a regular .I think they need new dj who have a passion for musc.Take care family bar may visit in the future see if youve made changes . Avid dancer
I went to Family Bar with a gay friend of mine and we both loved it. I didn't feel out of place at all, and the staff were really friendly. We'll be going back to Family Bar soon!!!
Fantastic bar which is fun any night of the week. Family Bar has a mixed crowd, great staff and general trashy-ness.
I was in Auckland for two weeks from Canada and I definitely had a great time partying at the Family Bar, especially the friendly bartenders. Namely; Eddie, Michael and Ben, friendly, service with a big smile even after working long hard hours. You guys are awesome.
Wikkid bar very cool to see some up and coming gay bars in Auckland! I loved it there, very cool. Does Family Bar have a contact email address that i can reach them on?
