We visited Everybody's Izakaya to take advantage of the Auckland Restaurant Month deal. Was quite impressed with Nick Honeyman's food when he was still at Cru @ Sale St. So, I was looking forward to seeing what he'd whipped up this time.
Some dishes were more impressive than others.
My biggest complaint?
Probably the value for money.
While the serving probably were alright, I personally thought that they were tending towards more of the 'petite' side of the scale. Could do with more for what we pay.
The star of the night for me were the gyozas. Crisp and tender. Most interesting and refreshing was the pear salad -- even though it had celery in it (sorry, not a fan, but hey... if a salad has celery and I still like it -- that's a bonus!). Their raw fish items were also good.
Their selection of alcoholic beverage was enough for me. We went with sake for the table.
Ambiance-wise, I think it's retained pretty much the same ambiance as before. The place doesn't look like much has changed from what it was before. It can be noisy but not so much that it's difficult to have a conversation with your dining partners.
Overall, a good dining experience. In future, I'll just have to choose the right dishes. If you are in doubt, asking the restaurant staff helps. The waiter serving us was helpful enough and was able to suggest things we should try. So, no complaints about their service either.
Came here for lunch last week and was sorely disappointed. Décor is gorgeous but the service was shocking. We were assured there would be a "5 to10 minute wait" and that the food would then come out "in a flash" so that we would still be able to make it within a work lunch hour. The place was not full so we thought that sounded feasible. Ha! We were seated over half an hour later, orders finally taken 20 minutes later (after having to rein in a waitress) and bento boxes delivered over half an hour later. Miso soup was so salty and thick it was inedible (clearly hadn't been diluted properly). What should have been a light, fresh Japanese salad was smothered in a heavy, cream style coleslaw dressing, and the katsu pork over-seasoned like something out of KFC. Then they got the bill wrong (overcharged). There was no apology for the delay or enquiry as to how we were getting on from any staff member. Guess they were too embarrassed?! What is most annoying is how misleading the maître-d was in the first place. Luckily I had put 2 hours on the parking meter. If you need to get back to work within 60-90 mins, DO NOT come here.
AMAZING food, service and atmosphere. Chef Honeyman is a true talent and his desserts are to die for. Highly Recommend Everybody's Izakaya!
