The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Minimalist Scandinavian chic with quirky design touches like tangles of orange safety lights and sturdy heritage wooden furniture. An internal glass wall reveals owner Kristina Jensen – ex pastry chef at Wellington’s Matterhorn – creating bakery and European patisserie magic in Elske’s huge open kitchen.
Service
Friendly and relaxed, easily dealing with a busy mid-morning rush of dine-in coffee fans and other customers picking up superlative baked goods to takeaway.
Drinks List
Promptly delivered and perfectly executed coffee from Caffe L’Affare, Charlie’s smoothies and San Pellegrino juices. We especially like the European touch of complimentary sparkling mineral water.
Highlights
Gossamer-light beignets that are worthy competition to Little & Friday’s stellar doughnuts as Newmarket’s best mid-morning treat, superb citron tarts, and gourmet pies with tasty spins on beef and kumara.
Most Surprising Dish
The Scandinavian breakfast with rye bread, salmon gravlax and pickled cucumber ($17).
The Bottom Line
Elske (Danish for ‘to love’) is a brilliant modern Kiwi spin on a traditional European bakery and patisserie. Some of Auckland’s best artisan breads and superb pastries, all crafted with care in the shiny and spacious kitchen.
A Reason To Return
For one of Elske’s two European spins on breakfast. Re-imagine lazy mornings in Paris or Lucerne with the French or Swiss breakfast options, before picking up some ciabatta or sour dough to go.
