The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Just maybe Waiheke’s most spectacular – and most spectacularly located – vineyard restaurant with an art-studded main pavilion segueing to endless sunset-friendly lawns dotted with quirky wind sculptures.
Service
Unobtrusive but professional, with an excellent knowledge of the small, seasonal menu, and the stellar range of Cable Bay wines.
Highlights
Middle-Eastern inspired and silky-smooth goat’s cheese croquettes partnered with a date puree and a crunchy pumpkin seed granola $23), and roast pork belly with a smoked potato purée, honey baked apple, baby leeks and mustard jus ($45).
Most Surprising Dish
The zesty lemon curd crème brûlée dotted with strawberries, delicate mini-meringues and buttermilk ($17).
Drinks List
Like we said – stellar – with standout wine choices being Cable Bay’s Syrah and Rosé. Cable Bay’s 2008 Marlborough Riesling is refreshingly off-dry and flinty.
The Bottom Line
Sophisticated food and wine, spectacular island views, and stunning architecture make Cable Bay a splurge-worthy choice. Start planning (and saving) for your next special occasion.
A Reason To Return
A visit to Cable Bay’s more informal Wine Bar for wine tasting and small plates including Italian pork meatballs with tomato and olives ($13), and eggplant with goat curd, chilli, and coriander ($10).
