The Box, a good local bar that has a good wine list and do great coffee is a favourite of all my workmates and a little different to all other cafes in that its outside. At night it has a great outlook over Aotea Square and is handy for after work drinks, morning tea, a stop after the movies or a warm up after an ice skate (just at this time of year when the skate rink is open). It’s also a very busy venue if there is an event on at the Aotea Centre or the Town Hall as it’s the best bar in that area. Don’t overlook it when your around Aotea Square.
I will never go to this place again!!! If I could choose zero stars, I definitely would!!! The young bar staff were very unprofessional! After taking our money and advising they will serve our drinks to us sporadically, they then decided after only our second round that they would not serve us at all because we were too 'rowdy'. I was appalled at this as not once did they tell us that we were being rowdy, giving us any sort of warning in how they perceived us. Was it because we were Maori and pacific islanders and all their staff weren't?!! How rude that laughter is deemed as 'too rowdy' and then revokes us from having drinks we had paid for already. None of the eight of us there were being any way near drunk or disorderly, however were told we would not be served due to being 'rowdy'. They knew we had only at the most, two drinks and it was only less than an hour of us being there. Hence, no one was at all intoxicated. It just did not make any sense!! The young staff there were very, very rude and it almost seemed as though they enjoyed their 'power trip'. We as a work group have been to BOX a few times and have heard others being louder than us. This staff knew how to ruin a night that was meant to be filled with joy. I hope no one else experiences this and advise strongly that you do not go here to avoid being treated with so much disgust.
Went to the cafe last night before going to see the Nutcracker on Ice and had a great experience. We had dinner at home but decided on something sweet before the show, we got their delicious home-made hot chocolate, which the girl behind the counter told me was melted dark choc. My husband and I also shared a 'whoopie' - great cake/ biscuit invention from a local provider. The only negative was the cold, the majority of the cafe is out on a terrace and in the winter this isn't that warm, but they do have heaters.
I went to BOX on Sunday, 6 May 2012 just before we went to see The Jersey Boys at the Civic. Totally disgusting is all I can say. The young staff were rude and unfriendly. There were two other couples eating at this place so it was not busy at all. It took 25 minutes for 3 staff to make 2 coffees and toast a panini. The coffees came out first and they were warm the panini finally came it was greasy and saturated in oil from the toasted sandwich machine. If your going to a show DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE FOR A SNACK OR MEAL. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE FOOD IS DISGUSTING FOR WHAT THEY CHARGE.
Lovely cupcakes and great drinks here. The terrace is a great place to sit on a hot day with a nice breeze coming across Aotea square. Great for people watching.
I was fortunate enough to go to the opening of BOX in the Aotea Centre last night - what a great place!
Looking forward to going back for a coffee & lunch to watch Aucklanders go by! And of course to purchase tickets to the next great show at The Edge!
Looking forward to the opening of the BOX in Aotea Square tonight...from what I've seen so far it's going to become a regular for me!
