Close your eyes and, aside from the music, you could be in the back streets of Barcelona. Authentic tapas, great wine served in cafe glasses and a friendly vibe which is relaxed and 'local'. It's clear that many of the punters on the nights we've visited are regulars, and that gives Bonita a real warmth and intimacy lacking is so many of the 'cool' bars that populate Ponsonby Road.
And, if wine isn't your thing - and they do have a fantastic selection of by the glass or bottles to discover - they make a mean cocktail.
We reminisced about long, lingering evenings Spain and felt happy to have found something so genuine, so close to home... Almost had me Spanish lisping it was so good!
I went to Bonita last night, with a couple of friends. We had an awesome night. Lots of yummy tapas - pretty big servings, and some delicious wine. Gorgeous antipasto (value for money) and they do a great chocolate brownie for dessert!! Wine is served in tumblers, it is pretty cool but I prefer wine glasses myself. Bonita is very relaxed and easy going and it's got a nice friendly vibe. The crowd is older and more reserved than that in your usual Ponsonby restaurant bar.
The three of us cruised into Bonita after intitally calling into the Malt House, but finding it far too loud to converse - Rugby season you see!
One of my favourite destinations whilst on O.E was Spain, so I was pretty keen on trying out Bonita and I have to say I wasn't disappointed.
Bonita is very welcoming (there were all types there), and, although we didn't try any food, it did certainly look appealing.
The wine list is quite varied and although I stuck with beer, my drinking partners said their wine choices were very good.
You get the feeling that it's a family run affair - definitely one place in Ponsonby that we'll be seeing more of.
Bonita is a cute, cosy, and kinda funky ... but they do need to invest in patio heaters for the outside area around about now.
Tapas were tasty and delictable, but rather small servings in comparison to tapas I've had elsewhere - especially the fillet with mash.
Interesting wine glasses (tumbler-like, the kind you normally resort to at an under-resourced flat!), but surprisingly ok and didn't take away from the delicious St Clair Pinot Gris - they actually made it even easier to get through the bottle!
Pleasant experience; not amazing, but that's due to the disappointing servings I believe (e.g. four tiny prawns for $9).
Nice central location.
