Birdcage Bar & Restaurant Information

Casual dining in one of Auckland's most historic taverns. The 127 year old Birdcage has been returned to her former glory with stained glass windows and original brick walls blended with more modern elements.

Outside, the new courtyard bar is one of the biggest and sunniest in Auckland. The food is rustic in style and the meals (lunch and dinner) will continue to evolve as guests dine as they feel.

Every product sourced had to be interesting and the wine list aims to encourage customers to try something new.

Went to birdcage over the weekend and it was Y-U-M!
We had the butchers board, a beef pizza and a chorizo pizza shared between 4, we were too full for dessert but the table next to us had desserts which looked fab. Price was about $95 for the 4 of us plus drinks. Staff were attentive, atmosphere was great- couldn't fault it.

Nice looking venue and the food was pleasant but it was so expensive. $67.50 for a "sharing plate" I call it a small main. It consisted of a bowl of mussels, 3 prawns, small portion of chopped salmon, calamari and bread. We had that with kumara fries which were very nice but cost $11 or $14. Needless to say we were still hungry and ordered the duck at $55 which consisted of 5 small flour tortillas, plum sauce and a small bowl of duck with some asian vegetables. The food was very nice but not worth that kind of money and the portions were far too small. Staff were polite and pleasant although our empty plates stayed on the table for a good 10 minutes after we had finished. I was still hungry so probably would have eaten more. We weren't offered anymore drinks so we got bored and got up to get our bill. So we're looking at a couple of drinks, some food and close to $200 bill for a 45 minute dining experience.I travel often and only in Auckland do I gasp at my food bill. I swear the restaurant owners in Auckland are playing a game of who can charge the most outrageous prices.Verdict, you drop $15-$20 of your sharing plates and you have a nice little bar. I would give the Birdcage Bar & Restaurant 4 stars but I can't due to terrible value for money.

I went with a group for lunch yesterday. We ordered 4 platters - 2 seafood and 2 meat. These platters were around $50 - $60 each and not worth the money. The seafood platter consisted of a large bowl of mussels (very cheap to buy), 3 prawns, a few fatty calamari, a small portion of chopped up salmon and a few slices of bread and a small dish of mayo. The meat was one huge chop (one was very under done) and a few slices of potato and a sauce. There was no effort made with the presentation - it was just served on a large wooden board.

One of our wine glasses still had lipstick on it from the previous person who used that glass.

Overall we thought the standard of the food was very poor and certainly not worth the cost. We will not be returning......
