Westhaven-based Bar 21 is one of the few bars located on the marina’s edge.
Although a far reach from the Viaduct action, the area is becoming an increasingly popular after-work venue, particularly with the addition of some large corporates in the vicinity.
Bar 21’s crowd is a comfortable mix of corporate, advertising and yachtie industry types and 5pm on a Friday is definitely their time.
Although the floor-to-ceiling mirrors initially confronting visitors would suggest otherwise, Bar 21 has a largely unpretentious and simple décor. Large wicker chairs are a feature—with drinkers often scrambling for these and they afford great vistas over the Marina and Harbour Bridge beyond.
The staff are relaxed, very efficient and professional—refreshing in a town where ‘tude is often such an annoying feature.
New Zealand wines are well represented, and there’s the usual beer options (including Steinlage).
Be warned, Bar 21 is not the atypical all-nighter venue: its real attraction is as an after-work possie, or as a pre-meal conversation facilitator.
Although the restaurant (Pontoon) is set well apart from the bar, the laid-back background music stays low-key until around 11pm when the diners have moved on to more exciting climbs.
Part of the Relish Group, Pontoon (and subsequently Bar 21) is a popular event venue, so in these summer months don’t be surprised to find it booked out over the weekends.
