I love the ambience at Atico Cocina. It had a very vibrant environment.
There were some hits and misses with the service. Our waitress was really friendly and nice. But, it felt like they kept forgetting things. Two cocktails didn't turn up until we'd asked twice. It was at least half an hour before it got served. One dish also didn't turn up but it didn't take long for it to come once we notified the waitress. Otherwise, not much issues except that being seated at the back of the restaurant, it can be a bit difficult to get the staff's attention.
It was quite disappointing that they'd run out of their "signature dish", the Lomo Apanado (angus beef marinated in coffee).. This disappointment was however redeemed by their very yummy pork chops!
Depending on what you order at Atico, food can be also a hit or miss. Perhaps it's down to the flavours and what you're used to? I think they do their meat dishes are better than the vegetarian. Didn't try their seafood so I'm not too sure. I got mixed feedback from my dining companions. I think the general consensus was that those who had vegetarian/seafood meals didn't rave about their meals while those who had meat based food were happy with what they had. They do prepare their food well, so no complaints there. I cannot comment on authenticity as I haven't had much Caribbean / South American food previously.
Portions are reasonable. You might want to supplement with one or two "tantalisers" to start with. Desserts are so-so.
Atico offers a comfortable and lively environment. I would like to go back and try the Lomo Apanado. Also, I wouldn't mind going back for their jugs of sangria. At $35 a pop, it's expensive.. but you get a huge jug. It's also full of fruit and very tasty. I tried the white sangria -- way better than what I've tried previously. I think I would come back to Atico and wouldn't mind recommending it for a night out.
Had a grab on voucher which i was hesitant about as the last few places i had used them for food were duds.. Atico.cocina however was fantastic! the staff were all friendly and inviting the layout of the restaurant is relaxed the there is also a large outside area.
We had a really nice bottle of wine and a seafood platter which was delish! it was generous for two and had prawns, oysters, marinated fish, salsa, mussels, cockles, grilled fish and something else. I also ordered the jerk chicken, which although tasty could have been much spicier, in-fact they should have a mild version as an option. it was still good though..and the menu looked well priced.. would defo recommend Atico.cocina and go back to try the rest of the menu .. yum!
A few friends and I got together last month for a catch up over a Friday lunch. The Freemans Bay setting of Atico.cocina was nice and handy for us all, and the buildings in the Victoria Park quarter are just so gorgeous.
I was initially quite surprised with the cuisine combination of caribbean and South American but looking over the menu, thought there were plenty of tasty dishes on offer.
I opted for the Lomo Apanado - apparently their best dish - steak marinated with coffee and pepper served on a bed of potato gratin. This meal was delicious from start to finish - fantastic!
The only other dish I tried was the tropical pork chops (a taste of a friends) which I thought were a bit bland.
I'll be recommending Atico.cocina - it is a fantastic new restaurant and well worth the visit.
Awesome! I've been longing for a good carribean restaurant in Auckland ever since coming back from my London oe where I grew to love the Jamaican food.
In Atico.cocina I think I've found my saviour and was really impressed. Had the jerk chicken which was succulent and it turns out an inspired choice. My partner had the pork chops which I tried - awesome too.
Atico.cocina is in the new Victoria Park Quarter - Auckland is becoming spoilt for choice now if you are a foodie!
