A group of us went to Atico Cocina for lunch and were all very impressed. The service was excellent as was the food. We shared starters of empanadas, squid, tuna and a yummy egg plant dish. The mains were also good. A highlight for the group was the pork and the fish was also tasty. The desserts were a real hit....huge portions were a bonus too. The churros and chili chocolate come highly recommended as does the coconut caramel tart with mango ice cream. All topped off with Atico's fabulous sangria. A great restaurant and would definitely recommend.

We went to Atico Cocina on a Wednesday night after booking a table for two with a Grabone voucher for a three course meal.Ambience: Great use of the heritage building, with a very welcoming feel. The music wasn't too loud, which I find can be a problem in other restaurants around Auckland.Drinks: We shared a 1 litre jug of red wine sangria (about $34 I think) which was served with lots of freshly cut fruit in a hand painted ceramic pitcher. It was just a little bit too sweet but still very nice and was better value than getting individual cocktails.Food: The tantalisers were tapas size so it would be easy to just get a few of those to share. The Colombian Style Empanadas ($16 for 3) were tasty with the charred corn coriander salsa and the tostones ($8 for a generous bowl) were delicious with the dip they served it with. These were like thickly cut round kumara chips. As another reviewer mentioned, plantains can be an acquired taste. I have had plantains in a Cuban restaurant in Miami and they were the same. For mains we had the Cabra al Curry (goat curry $32) served with coconut rice and tostones. The curry was flavourful and the meat a good texture so pretty good overall. We also had the Argentinian Skirt Steak ($36), which was a good serving size and cooked just as I'd ordered it (medium rare). All of the food arrived in a timely manner and hot.We finished off with the Delicia Cubana (coconut flan with guava sauce $14) and the sorbet trio ($12). The flan was delicious without being overly sweet and a good creamy texture. Although I was pretty full by this point, I ate the whole thing :-) Service: Friendly and attentive staff, just the right level of service though that might have been helped by the fact that we were there on a Wednesday night and although all the tables were full it wasn't a madhouse. Overall: Atico Cocina is very good and we'll be happy to go back, whether it's just Friday sangrias after work or something a little more special.

surprisingly good restaurant in Freeman's bay. I say 'surprisingly good' because I've read a fair amount of negatively-slanted reviews for Atico Cocina online but goes to show, experiences are definitely objective - I had nothing but compliments for it.
It's quite a cool setting and staff more than helpful in explaining the flavours and things like portion sizes (which are really good btw). Loved the lomo apanado steak...geez it's good! the pork croquettes for starters were also pretty good.
As you can probably tell Im a meat fiend - and happy to say Atico Cocina delivered! Go give it a try.

My husband and I went for dinner to use our Grabone Voucher and so far we had the best experience in Auckland. The set menu of five courses was superb.
The food was near perfection, lovely starters which we were told is a traditional corn bread from Columbia and Venezuela. Then we had a lovely and refreshing calamari slaw followed by a winterish crayfish bisque. The main was the highlight - a Tuna dished cooked as never tried before, Mr. had a beautiful steak.
Atico Cocina really delivered, as we have tried a few degustation menus before, but this was outstanding. Service was friendly and ambiance really warm....we will come back to try more ...my husband promised.

Worst restaurant I have ever been to in a while, took a group of friends there tonight. The staff must of thought we were invisible because no one asked us how our night/food was going. My friend had to get up and ask the staff how far our food was and the waiter looked at him and walked away without replying back. The chef looked stressed out of his mind and we saw obvious tension between the kitchen staff and waiters. We checked in at 7:30pm, got our entrees around 8pm and didn't get our main until 9pm! The cocktails were terrible, and they even took 30mins.I asked to speak with the manager and the waiter replied back with "she quit two months ago", so I voiced my thought in regards to the lack of service and attention and he replied with "oh ok, we tried our best, you can write a review on the internet" and gave us the bill and didn't even apologize to my friends and I. The couple next to us also looked like they were about the walk out the door.I have never been so upset and guttered about a restaurant, save your money and go up the road to La Zeppa or Sale St....Terrible terrible terrible, shame on you Atico Cocina!!!

I love the ambience at Atico Cocina. It had a very vibrant environment.

There were some hits and misses with the service. Our waitress was really friendly and nice. But, it felt like they kept forgetting things. Two cocktails didn't turn up until we'd asked twice. It was at least half an hour before it got served. One dish also didn't turn up but it didn't take long for it to come once we notified the waitress. Otherwise, not much issues except that being seated at the back of the restaurant, it can be a bit difficult to get the staff's attention.

It was quite disappointing that they'd run out of their "signature dish", the Lomo Apanado (angus beef marinated in coffee).. This disappointment was however redeemed by their very yummy pork chops!

Depending on what you order at Atico, food can be also a hit or miss. Perhaps it's down to the flavours and what you're used to? I think they do their meat dishes are better than the vegetarian. Didn't try their seafood so I'm not too sure. I got mixed feedback from my dining companions. I think the general consensus was that those who had vegetarian/seafood meals didn't rave about their meals while those who had meat based food were happy with what they had. They do prepare their food well, so no complaints there. I cannot comment on authenticity as I haven't had much Caribbean / South American food previously.

Portions are reasonable. You might want to supplement with one or two "tantalisers" to start with. Desserts are so-so.

Atico offers a comfortable and lively environment. I would like to go back and try the Lomo Apanado. Also, I wouldn't mind going back for their jugs of sangria. At $35 a pop, it's expensive.. but you get a huge jug. It's also full of fruit and very tasty. I tried the white sangria -- way better than what I've tried previously. I think I would come back to Atico and wouldn't mind recommending it for a night out.

Had a grab on voucher which i was hesitant about as the last few places i had used them for food were duds.. Atico.cocina however was fantastic! the staff were all friendly and inviting the layout of the restaurant is relaxed the there is also a large outside area.

We had a really nice bottle of wine and a seafood platter which was delish! it was generous for two and had prawns, oysters, marinated fish, salsa, mussels, cockles, grilled fish and something else. I also ordered the jerk chicken, which although tasty could have been much spicier, in-fact they should have a mild version as an option. it was still good though..and the menu looked well priced.. would defo recommend Atico.cocina and go back to try the rest of the menu .. yum!
