46 & York, Parnell - Bar Review
Vibe
Crisp white decor, lots of natural light, and chilled beats on a Sunday afternoon all combine smoothly at one of Auckland’s classiest and most sophisticated new bars.
Service
Savvy and professional, with both male and female staff dressed in coolly matching gear that’s a great alternative to other more casual dress codes around town.
Drinks List
International brews like Asahi, Budvar and Estrella Damm are all on tap, complemented by a decent selection of bottled beer and cider including the mighty hops-laden Hopwired IPA from 8 Wired. Most wines from the concise winelist are available by the glass – including celebration-ready MoÎt – and the short cocktail list skews to innovative spins on classics like caipirinhas and pisco sours. The Parnell Club with gin, lavender syrup, lemon juice, mint and egg white was super-refreshing early on a warm summer’s evening.
Feeling Peckish?
The shortish menu of shared plates (around $12 to $20) is divided handily into Paddock, Ocean and Garden. The smokey pulled pork tostadas topped with pineapple salsa and coriander were good value at $14 for four, and we’ve heard great things about 46 & York’s chilled prawns with house dip, lemon and Tabasco.
The Bottom Line
Parnell’s fallen off Auckland’s eating and drinking radar in recent years, but the sassy and stylish 46 & York is definitely worth giving the inner suburb a second look.
A Reason to Return
For other interesting options on the classy food menu including oxtail and agria potato croquettes ($13.50), and the zingy kokoda with raw fish, coconut, cos lettuce and kumara ($16).
