Winter sports in Auckland Get your fix of winter sports here without having to leave Auckland.

If you can't get away to the slopes and want to get your winter sports fix, there are plenty of options in Auckland to get out on the snow or ice, whichever takes your fancy.

Ice Skating

Auckland has two ice rinks to choose from with both offering a host of ice skating activities to make the best of the ice.

You can head along for a general session, learn to skate with one of their trained instructors, sign up for a figure skating course or party on down at one of their ice raves.

Skiing

Snowplanet is New Zealand's only indoor snowdome providing snow sports 365 days a year

Set at a permanent -5C and with real snow falling weekly, Snowplanet in Silverdale is the only place in New Zealand where you can head to the piste all year round.

With two drag-lifts, a carpet lift for beginners, a permanent terrain park and 'tunes' all day long there is something for everyone.

Ice Hockey

With ages ranging from 13 and up, the Auckland Ice Hockey Association represents ice hockey teams that compete nationally.

Learn to Play is a great new initiative from the AIHA designed to provide kids with an introduction to ice hockey.

Freestyle Snowboarding

With a permanent terrain park, Snowplanet is the place to head to if you like your snowboarding a little more freestyle.

With a range of rainbows, slide bars and jumps available all year round and a 'kicking' soundtrack to cruise along to, you'll find some on New Zealand's top riders hitting to course to try out new tricks.

All day passes are available as well as freestyle training lessons to make sure you enjoy the park safely.

Curling

Curling ("bowls on ice") was imported from Scotland into NZ in 1873 and since has flourished to include adult and school level competitions.

Auckland Curling has a club night almost every Sunday evening from May to October held at Paradice Ice Skating in Avondale. They also run open evenings where you can head over and give curling a go. Click here for more info on Auckland Curling.
