Museum Of Transport and Technology (MOTAT)
New Zealand's largest transport and technology museum, MOTAT takes you on an interactive journey through many of the technological achievements that have helped shaped the world we live in.
Since it first opened in 1964, the attraction has been explored and enjoyed by millions of local, national and international visitors.
MOTAT has permanent exhibitions on early Auckland, pioneers of aviation, primary industries, road transport, tramway and tramcars.
Interactive exhibits include the tactile dome and hands-on science area. Encompassing almost 20 interactive displays, the science area’s highlight has to be earthquake simulator, where visitors can experience the force of devastating tremors.
A Victorian village complete with school house, church and forge, restored 1877 pumphouse and beam engine is also well worth a visit.
Also on display are the Sir Keith Park Memorial Aviation Collection, military collection and rail displays.
The museum itself is built on a site that once pumped water drawn from Western Springs to early Auckland homes and businesses. The Pumphouse, with its magnificent beam engine, has had extensive conservation to ensure its significance in Auckland's history is preserved.
For research purposes, MOTAT also houses the Walsh Memorial Library. This reference library holds a wide range of books relating to technology and is open to the general public from 10.00am to 5.00pm every day (last entry 4.30pm).
The Museum Of Transport and Technology is located in Western Springs, Auckland.
