Matakana Wine Trail

Matakana Wine Trail

Matakana Road is home to a string of vineyards, all of which offer wine tasting.

Embark on your wine trail at the Ascension Vineyard & Café; a hilltop vineyard and winery nestled along the scenic Matakana Road. Run by fifth generation winegrowers, Ascension’s wine tasting facility and café are open seven days a week.

Matakana Estate is another family run boutique vineyard with a dedicated wine-tasting facility overlooking their land—an experience not to be missed. The vineyard is open Monday to Sunday.

For wines with a heavy Italian influence, Heron’s Flight is your port of call. Its classic Italian Sangiovese and Dolcetto grapes showcase the vibrant flavour of their wines, and are matched with fresh seasonal produce from the Matakana region.

Established in 1994, Hyperion Wines is also located off Matakana Road. The vineyard—named after the mythological Greek sun god—has its wine produced in a converted cowshed surrounded by rustic farm buildings. Hyperion Wines is open on weekends and public holidays.
