But, that’s exactly what Larry and Kath Park did.
For over a decade, they travelled across NZ with a bunch of animals in tow. Like a farmyard ark on wheels, they’d rock into town and let the local kids tuck into a rural experience.
Urban-entrenched children who had never even seen a real live sheep, Old MacDonald’s Travelling Farmyard opened up a whole new world to them.
These kids had a chance to scratch a pig behind the ears, jump on a horse or scrunch their fingers into uncut wool; kiwi experiences that we would have once taken for granted.
But, after many years on the road, Larry and Kath decided to stop in one place and they purchased Kiwi Valley, an 18-acre block on the outskirts of Henderson.
“Our house was cut in half and moved here in two pieces. The barn came on a third truck. We put the barn roof up on poles and it nearly blew down in the first big storm—we had to chain trucks to the front because the wind was lifting it like a kite,” tells Kath.
