Jono Park's picks of the people, places, things that are great in Auckland

TOPMAN @ THE DEPARTMENT STORE
The Department Store in Takapuna looks tiny, so it was with some trepidation that this ex-Londoner ventured into the Topman section at the back of the ground floor level. The range is small compared to the Oxford St behemoth but there are some amazing pieces. Shirts and are definitely better priced comparatively to jackets and suits but . I picked up an amazing buttoned short sleeve shirt for $30. I miss Topman UK a lot, but this is filling the void.

THE BACK ROOM AT COCO'S CANTINA
A little hidden gem out the back of the fantastic K Rd restaurant. Perfect for a party of 8 or so, especially if you're after something a little quieter than than the hustle and bustle inside. Coco's is famous for its warm service, and this i extends more literally when sitting out the back. heaters and there's a supply of blankets if you're still a bit cold. Match this with the incredible meatballs or pork belly and a bottle of red, and it's the perfect way to relax on these cold August evenings.

PERONI LEGGARA
It's been around for a while, but Peroni's light beer hasn't lost its appeal. It's Peroni as you love it but with fewer carbs and 3.5% alcohol. Bye bye bloated feeling and next day hangover. It's a shame that it's no longer brewed in Italy, but that does mean it's slightly cheaper to buy. Either from the supermarket or at restaurants around town (Prego and Rakinos to name but two).

AUCKLAND HYBRID TAXIS
Even if you're convinced that the driver has stalled the car every time it stops at traffic lights, it's still good to know that in a tiny way your taxi fare is helping the planet. Every little counts right? If you're willing to wait a bit for your cab, go with Green Cabs (0508 4GREEN) or if it's a bit more urgent call Auckland Co-op (300 3000). Their cars aren't all hybrid, but 9 times out of 10 you're likely to get one.

ROOM 104
Guys, if you want a great haircut and one of the coolest surroundings in town, then pop into the CBD to Room 104 on Commerce St. Jay has been cutting my hair for 6 years and I've got no intention to stop now, especially after the launch of his new venture with his brother. It's still a work in progress but the laid-back service is already top notch and these guys know how to make you look good. Check out their website here.
