How to Help Christchurch

How to Help Christchurch

In light of the major February 22 earthquake we've put together a list of the best ways to help our friends and families in Christchurch.

The Red Cross has advised that there are extreme difficulties in donating goods such as food and clothing because of how much work must go in to tranporting it and distributing it, also it has a detrimental effect on the recovering communities by the time it get there by undermining the local economy. They have therefore advised us that financial donations are the most effective and immediate way to help. We've listed a number of agencies taking donations below, as well as some other information relating to helping the recovery process.

Donations can be made to the following organisations:

Salvation Army
New Zealand Red Cross
ASB
National Bank
ANZ
Bank of New Zealand
Kiwibank

In addition to financial donations a number of other organisations are offering resources to help you help Christchurch.

Air New Zealand is offering incredibly affordable flights to and from Christchurch on the domestic network until midnight Friday February 25 2011.
All available fares on Air New Zealand domestic services from any point on the domestic network to/from Christchurch for booking and travel through until middnight Friday morning are available for $50 one way. These can be booked via the Air New Zealand website and call centre.

Air New Zealand has this morning confirmed compassionate international fares for immediate family wishing to travel to or from Christchurch. These fares are available for immediate family only, and can be booked via the Air New Zealand Call Centre.

Fares are as follows:

All Tasman and Pacific Island fares, NZD50 one way (plus tax)
All long haul fares, NZD400 one way (plus tax)

Google has set up a Crisis Response website with important phone numbers, maps, information and live updates as a hub for earthquake information. There is also a People Finder service on the site where you can search for details of a missing loved one or post information about someone you know is safe.

To help all of the pets and animals affected by the earthquake you can text 'FOOD' to 4662 to donate $3 to the Paw Justice animal food bank.

If you have a spare room and can host Christchurch residents travelling to Auckland to escape the disaster for a while you can call 0800 AUCKLAND to register for billeting. The service will match your facilities with a deserving Cantabrian. Welcoming someone to your home is a very human way to help.
