There are a few hot air balloon companies that offer excursions in the Auckland area; one of which is the Balloon Expedition Company of New Zealand.
Operating for nearly 15 years, this company offers balloon flights by appointment for individuals and groups of up to 16 people. Running seven days a week (including public holidays), the Balloon Expedition Company run flights at the crack of dawn.
Balloon flights are, by nature, dependent on the weather—and the route you take during one of the Balloon Expedition’s flights will be influenced by the elements. However, the vast majority of their flights take place over Auckland’s North West or the upper reaches of the Waitemata Harbour.
Most flights last for approximately an hour; however, flight times may vary according to weather conditions and the availability of suitable landing sites. Allow approximately six hours for the whole excursion, from pick-up to drop-off.
Passengers are met at the Westgate Centre at the end of the north-western motorway. The company will then ferry you to the designated take-off area (chosen on the day, according to weather conditions).
Final pre-flight preparations are then made—which passengers are encouraged to assist with, although this is not compulsory.
At the end of each flight, a complimentary breakfast is served which includes sparkling wine, croissants, cheeseboards and fresh fruit.
Balloon Safaris, located in Albany, is another of Auckland’s well-established hot air balloon companies which offers flights by appointment. They operate a variety of hot air balloons—the largest standing almost 110-feet tall and carrying up to eight adult passengers.
All of their flights are celebrated in the very best of ballooning tradition, with bubbly and snacks served on completion of every flight.
