With a community of around 20 winemakers, Henderson produces a range of Chardonnay and premium red grape varieties such as pinot noir and pinotage which flourish in the relative warmth and loam-clay soils of the area.
Wine tasting enthusiasts can enjoy easy access to the region’s vineyards as most of them are located within minutes of the centre of Henderson.
Four are located on Lincoln Road, just off the north-western motorway; and two are in the Henderson Valley. Others are based just off Bruce McLaren Road and a number of secondary roads in the area.
Henderson’s old established wineries have excellent modern facilities, producing prestigious award-winning wines made from grapes grown locally and also imported from the predominant grape growing regions of New Zealand.
The welcome mat is out for visitors to most of the wineries and vineyards; some selling their wares in purpose-built wine tasting areas or cafes.
Start your wine trail at Lincoln Road, a 15-minute drive west from Downtown Auckland. Most of the other Henderson wineries are located further west, near the scenic Waitakere Ranges.
With a winemaking history spanning nearly 70 years, Lincoln Vineyards has a huge following. The winery features traditional winemaking techniques such as whole-bunch basket pressing and wild yeast fermentation in small open top fermenters.
Artisan Wines produces multiple award-winning wines. First planted in 1995, this beautiful terraced vineyard is a must stop for any true wine connoisseur.
Next stop is Babich Wines: one of the country’s largest family-owned wine companies, it has one of the most breathtaking vineyard views in Auckland.
With a reputation for producing top quality wines, St Jerome is synonymous with class. Its legendary Matuka, the Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, is considered to be one of New Zealand's most spectacular reds. Wine tasting tours are available by appointment.
