AUCKLAND HOT 5 - November 2012

My favourite issue of the year is out now, with the city's Top 50 cafes named. Great to see Kokako getting some well-deserved love, and accolades for some newbies on the block including the Little Bird Unbakery and Grano. There's some curious choices (the Art Gallery Cafe in the Top 10? Really?), and some big names didn't make the cut (including 2010 overall winner Gala) but it's a great list to work your way through.

The fantastic outdoor installation art event is back on November 9 and 10 at Weston Park, Ponsonby. Artists are challenged to 'evolve projects that not only fit the specific contours of the great, urban outdoors but that must illuminate the dark using clean, eco-friendly energy and materials wherever possible'. It's beautiful and it's free! A must-see!

Nothing starts a Saturday morning better than a coffee at La Cigale accompanied by one of the many wonderful freshly baked treats on offer. Personal favourite - the almond croissant straight out of the oven, and I have it on good authority that the chocolate brioche is amazing. The croque-monsieur is singled out by Food Heroes' Simon Farrell-Green as the best thing to eat for under $10 in Auckland.

I love these guys. Based in Kingsland, Endemicworld is fantastic for prints, quirky items and gifts. I've popped into their offices for extremely last minute purchases and they've been incredibly obliging and helpful, even though I think you're supposed to order online! It's all designed and made in NZ, and they have a pop-up store coming soon.

A great little find in Mt Wellington plonked in the middle of an industrial neighbourhood. It's not flash and it's not fancy but it does a mean burger, some great cabinet food and the staff are friendly. Good honest food which sometimes is exactly what you crave. Try and get a seat out the back if you can.

Not So Hot

Wine in a bag, lamb down the pants. Poor old Farro Fresh have had a bad run with shoplifters recently, but kudos to them for 'showing and shaming'.
