AUCKLAND HOT 5 - JULY 2014

CHANGES!

Lots of revamps, reimaginings and brand new openings recently all around Auckland. We love the bright new look of the Cav – so overdue, and so really well done. Dear Jervois has been getting some great buzz, perhaps due to the great reputation of its sister café Little King in Milford. My god, their eggs bene look fantastic. Whilst we experienced many happy times at Landreth & Co, its reinvention as Clear Water Peak is wonderful and great to see the same fantastic team behind the counter. And if I have another person tell me about Crepes A Go-Go’s Nutella and banana crepe, I might just very well have to try one or three.

SUGAR SUGAR!

Don’t be put off by the initial lukewarm reviews... it seems that The Sugar Club has found its groove, if the night we went there was anything to go by. Essentially a ‘choose your own mini-degustation’ experience, the service was top notch, the wine matches excellent and atmosphere humming. Oh and gents, let’s not forget the best ‘passing the time’ view in Auckland (you’ll see what I mean when you use the bathrooms).

FARINA FAVOLOSO!

AKA Toto goes mainstream. This Italian eatery is a fantastic addition to Ponsonby Road, and is already buzzing with customers, sometime to the point of spilling out onto the street. Reviews of the lunchtime ‘yum ciao’ have been middling, but we loved it, and happily stuffed ourselves silly. The new must-go.

GRINDER!

We’ve got an upcoming feature on Auckland cooking classes not too far away, but a quick shout out to the team at Atomic for their excellent Barista Introduction courses. We had a one-on-one course with the amazing Masako and left feeling like we could make a not-too-shabby flat white without too much difficulty. Remember, it’s all about the tapping / grinding / extraction / steaming / temperature / density / pour / timing.

FAN-TERRACE-TIC!

Loving Eden Terrace right now! Goodness Gracious is a fantastic little café just near the top of the New North & Mt Eden Rd intersection. Tough to park at, but worth it for yummy bagels and great coffee. We’re also converted fans of Grano’s lunchtime takeaway menu, especially the wild rice salad with quinoa, broccoli, feta, beetroot and toasted almonds. Delish.
