AUCKLAND HOT 5 - August 2012

Auckland really is becoming a food mecca, and what better way to celebrate this than with Auckland Restaurant Month put together by the ever-impressive Big Little City. All this month you can get fantastic deals at a large number of restaurants around the city, as well as attend fantastic culinary events. Check out all the details here and bon appetit!

One for the guys. I was put onto this range of mens skincare and shaving products by the team at Room 104 (if you haven't changed hairdressers to them yet, what's wrong with you?!). The brainchild of ex-Black Cap Dion Nash, Triumph and Disaster's range includes facial scrubs, moisturiser and soaps. The packaging is beautiful and I highly recommend the old-fashioned shaving cream (proper brush essential).

I was stuck at a train station at Montepulciano a few years back and had my Italian been better than… well… anything, I would have ventured into the township and sampled some of the local drop. 4 years later, and it's just a short walk up the road to the fabulous Pane E Vino where the wine comes in 1/2 or 1 Litre carafes. It's cheap and cheerful, but so very Italian.

You may have seen Baby Loves Disco at the Bloom Festival earlier in the year as well as on Good Morning recently. A good friend of mine is the brains behind this fantastic regular event for kids and their parents. It's the best of both worlds - kids are entertained for the afternoon with music, face painting and competitions, whilst parents can relax with friends and a drink or two. The next BLD is Disco Circus for Plunket at Sale St on August 18th with Jason Kerrison DJing.

What a delight the block between Crummer Rd and Williamson Ave has become, with the recent move to the area by Flotsam and Jetsam (which has much benefited from the increased space). If you're wanting to see some incredible jewellery in a weird and wonderful setting, then head to Wunderkammer. The prices are eye watering, but for a really unique gift this is a great spot.

Sorry but it's gone on too long - three times I've been to Britomart Country Club and three times I've come away amazed at the rudeness of the bar staff there. Smiles are nonexistent, interest in the customer MIA, and my desire to go back again… miniscule. You might be in a cool spot guys, but it's going to your heads. Take a look across the road to Tyler Street to see how service is done properly.
