Supported by 24 clubs spread throughout the region, the clubs are dotted across a vast geographical area. Teams come from as far north as Whangaparoa, and as far south as Papatoetoe—and this thriving cricket community is administered by the Auckland Cricket Association.
Most clubs have teams ranging from the serious-minded, to those who just enjoy a Saturday afternoon hit around.
Each club feeds into the city’s representative side, the State Auckland Aces, who play both one- and four-day cricket from December through to April.
The State Auckland Aces’ home games are played at Auckland’s home of cricket, Eden Park, usually on the outer oval—one of the most scenic grounds to watch cricket in the country.
The elite players occupy the premier and first grades and play a mixture of one- and two-day cricket over the season. It’s common to see Auckland representative players in these grades and occasionally the odd New Zealand Black Cap representative.
Though the season runs from mid-October till the end of March, club cricket registration began in August, so now is the time to contact your local club.
Games are played at some of the most picturesque parks in the city—and with ample room to sit, lap up the sun and enjoy proceedings, cricket continues to be one of the best spectator sports in town.
