5 THINGS WE LOVE...

CHURROS WITH SALTED CARAMEL SAUCE AND MONDIAL

We weren't expecting to go to Mondial for dessert a few weeks back, but after a disappointing meal elsewhere, we popped in late on a Thursday night. Best decision we ever made, as one of the dessert specials was a truly sublime churros (spanish doughnuts) with a salted caramel sauce. This is not on the permanent menu, but completely deserves to be. If it's not there when you go (and you should just for this), picket them, pester them and harangue them until they make them for you, for they are incredible.

DAVID O'DOHERTY & MARCEL LUCONT

My two picks for the Comedy Festival. They're on early in May, so get your tickets now. I saw O'Doherty in the Uk 4 years ago, and that man and his keyboard made me laugh more in 60 minutes than I can remember. Lucont made a great impression last year hosting the Le Comique variety show so I'm looking forward to seeing him in his own show. If you miss these, there are so many other great options. Just make sure you go to at least one.

BRAMPTINS IN DEVONPORT

For anyone who has lived in London, this fantastic little shop in Devonport is like a teleport to the local Sainsbury's. There's a fantastic variety of British goodies here, and not just the cliched classics either. We walked out with a bag load of Walkers crisps, some much-missed McVities Rich Tea biscuits and I'm still wanting to head back for what was my favourite muesli and marmalade. And yes, I realise that makes me sound about 78.

FLOTSAM & JETSAM

This amazing little shop (tucked away next on Richmond Rd between a dairy and a laundromat) is truly one of the best places to buy offbeat gifts for friends, or actually just for yourself. It's crammed full of diverse stuff, from furniture to retro kitchenware to old cafe menu signs! It's not the cheapest, but you'll find things in here that you won't find anywhere else. I grabbed some old milk bottles in crates, managed to hold back on buying up old shop signage and also have my eye on a set of old filing drawers. Go see and buy, it's wonderful.

METRO'S TOP 50 RESTAURANTS ISSUE
Whether you agree or disagree with their choices, this month's issue of Metro is one to get if you're a foodie. Depot deservedly nabbed the supreme award, as well as a clutch of others. Congrats also to the fantastic Engine Room and Clooney who also picked up big prizes.

...AND ONE THING WE DON'T

RESTAURANT SURCHARGES
All hail the small but growing band of restaurants and cafes that are bucking the trend and not charging surcharges on public holidays - Depot, Shaky Isles and Kokako to name but a few.
