5 THINGS WE LOVE...

ICECREAM TASTINGS AT KOHU RD CREAMERY

Who would have thought that such goodness was nestled between a panel beaters and a mechanics. The café is good, but it’s the ice-cream that excels. Salted Caramel and Lemon Curd…. Oh. Good. Lord. Now, the ice-cream’s not cheap, but if you’re brunching there, they’re more than happy to give you tasting samples of their amazing selections, and their one scoop punnets are extremely generous.

OLD SIGNS
Look closely and you can find some fantastic old signage dotted around the city. Some favourites are the rusting but still impressive AKAI sign on Galatos St, the Coca Cola billboard on New North Rd, Fresh Up and Mr Whippy in Hailwood, with Whangaparoa Stationers across the road at Eighthirty. One mystery one though is on Cascade St in Freeman's Bay that peeks through the foliage on one of the walls. It's like a large-scale cryptic crossword. From what I can make out it's _ A D _ A R K. It's definitely not aardvark. Any thoughts?

THE LIMITED BREAKFAST CHOICES AT DEPOT

Normally if a café only has 3 choices on their breakfast menu it would be slammed. But the fact that the breakfasts at Depot are so damn good means that it swings the other way. I ‘ve never seen a menu here at breakfast time – it’s all verbal. Favourite would be the beignets (square mini doughnuts) accompanied by the most amazing of passionfruit curds. The bacon and egg doona and muesli with rhubarb come a close second.

TWITTERERS PART 2

I mentioned @gatherandhuntnz, @MetroMagNZ, and @ViewNewZealand last time. How’s about @BritomartNZ for all the happenings downtown, @supremeauckland for great coffee tasting invites, @denizenmagazine for the latest and greatest things for your life that you can’t afford and @jonopark – that would be me!

NEWBIES ON THE SCENE
Another little bit of Wellington popping up around the city. Mojo Garage on Carlton Gore Rd is (surprise, surprise) in an old garage and it’s been really nicely fitted out. A full review to come, but initial thoughts are pretty good. Also about to blast onto the scene is the new Coco’s Cantina bar (the old Mister Morning). Can’t wait.

...AND ONE THING WE DON'T

STREET RESURFACING
It’s EVERYWHERE! Our entire street, plus a block either side was designated No Parking for 3 days recently. Why? Where do we park? Why does it take so long? Does it really need to be swept 6 weeks later and the roads closed off AGAIN!? Arrrgh!....... Rant over. Sorry.
