Two out of Five stars
Running time: 99 mins

Average comedy that squanders its decent premise in favour of a splattering of unfunny gross-out gags.

What's it all about?
Dane Cook stars as Charlie Logan, a womaniser who discovers that he was cursed when he was 10 years old, following a game of Spin the Bottle and a closet-based encounter with a weird Goth girl. The curse means that every woman Chuck sleeps with is destined to find true love with the next guy she meets.

When word gets around, Chuck finds single women literally throwing themselves at him in order to sample his good luck charms and marry the man of their dreams. However, when Chuck falls for accident-prone penguin-keeper Cam (Jessica Alba) he has to find some way of breaking the curse before he loses her to another man.

The Good
Jessica Alba gives a genuinely charming performance and reveals a hitherto unsuspected talent for physical comedy that suggest she could have a Cameron Diaz-style career ahead of her. Similarly, Dan Fogler raises a few early laughs as Chuck's sleazy, breast-obsessed best friend Stu but his one-note character quickly becomes tiresome.

The Bad
The film's biggest problem is that the slew of gross-out gags (such as Chuck sleeping with grotesquely overweight women in order to test the charm's powers) simply aren't funny enough. There's also an unwelcome hint of misogyny in the script that never quite goes away.

The film's other problem is Cook himself, perhaps Hollywood's most slappable leading man. He's never remotely believable in the role and there's zero chemistry between him and Alba.

Sadly, director Mark Helfrich is no Farrelly Brother, which is a shame, because the premise is actually quite decent and you can't help wondering what the Farrellys might have done with it.

Worth seeing?
In short, Good Luck Chuck delivers one or two laughs but is let down by a needlessly vulgar script and a charisma-free performance from Dane Cook. Disappointing.
