Precisely why does Mr. Fox need a mid-life crisis?
Roald Dahl's Fox is a sort of animal Oddyseus - wily, resourceful and supremely self-confident. If he has a flaw, it's that his tendency to overestimate his capabilities gets himself and others into trouble. And, actually, that's enough. There's no sign that Mr. Fox's self-confidence might actually be hollow, or that his family's devotion to him might be skewed or twisted in any way - and there doesn't really need to be. Roald Dahl doesn't ever really deal in self-doubting or self-defeating characters - he deals in modern and magnificent fairy tales, which are full of magic and fantasy, and end with the good rewarded and the bad punished.
Wes Anderson, on the other hand, has created a visually beautiful but weirdly mismatched film. He creates a vast amount of extra plot (both a pre-and postscript to the original book). This worked for other movies - notable "Where The Wild things Are" because the extra detail fit with the themes and subtext of the book. In this case it feels like precisely the opposite. Roald Dahl's (deliberately) simplistic story about a trickster who suddenly finds himself in trouble as a result of his tricks, and must use his cunning to resolve the problem has become a more convoluted and yet oddly more generic story about a man accepting the limitations of his age and a dysfunctional family learning to deal with each other. In the midst of this there are odd utterly cartoonish segments that appear to have come from an entirely different movie.
The end result is a movie that doesn't seem to know who it's for - is it a light-hearted children's talking-animal movie? Or is it a more complex exploration of adult relationships? A better movie (like "The Incredibles") might manage to do both of these at once without the contrast seeming jarring. A better movie (like "The Dark Crystal") might survive its contradictions and go on to become a cult classic. I'm not so sure in this case.
Stunning film. Really enjoyed George Clooney's performance in Fantastic Mr Fox and the storyline/production in general.
I watched Fantastic Mr Fox with my two kids and they both thoroughly enjoyed it...more Roald Dahl adaptions please!
I was kind of forced to watch this movie because there was almost no other choice. But now I'm glad that I did watch it, because there is more to it than just the 2D graphics and I never thought ill enjoy the movie as I actually did.
I recommend this to nearly everybody because it actually teaches you a few things here and there which is interesting to know. four out of five stars but deserves 5.
cool, cool movie - thought the stop-motion nature of the movie would be a bit tedious but having taken the girls to Fantastic Mr Fox last week, we all really enjoyed it.
I'd recommend seeing in on a large screen though - the colours and effects really will stand out!
We all really enjoyed this movie! Not over the top bells & whistle animation, and I loved the "cussing", made a nice change & something different to watch for the whole family!
Recommend seeing this one! And Master 5 now walks round the house doing the fantastic Mr Fox whistle!
