Tom Cruise is much better when he doesn't take himself too seriously. Pity it doesn't happen very often. 'Knight & Day' was one example and though overall that one was a flop the slightly flaky Cruise was refreshing.
This film has some humour and Cruise's character starts off as a coward which is probably a first. But reliving the same day of war one too many times can harden anyone so the main character does, of course, eventually turn into an action hero but less self-indulgent than usual. Maybe it's the director but it feels like there's slightly less focus on Cruise than usual and Emily Blunt gets to do her bit as well.
The story is ok - seems too much like a video game at times but quite amusing and tightly knit nonetheless.
What I really loved in this flick was the magnificent creatures - the Aplha alien was gorgeous! Too bad we did not get to see enough of those. The soldier creatures were great also. The sets looked good as well.
Everything seems right about this film but something's missing. Can't put my ginger on what it was though. Verdict - recommended. Go see it and tell me what's missing!
