Daybreakers is a great addition to the genre of Vampire movies out there today.
By setting the movie in a world where most of the earth's residents are now vampires sets it apart from all the others. The storyline runs that there is now a world-wide blood shortage and any remaining humans are hunted down and farmed for their blood, a rather unfortunate ending if you ask me.
There are still a few renegade humans on the run searching out vampire's who are sympathetic to their cause. Ethan Hawke's 'Ed' is one of these sympathisers interacting well with Claudia Karvan and Willem Dafoe's characters.
Sam Neill plays the head of the corporation responsible for supplying most of the world with blood, in ever decreasing proportions, by farming the humans. He has his own agenda when it come's to trying to find a cure for the virus that caused the population explosion of vampires. It's nice to see Sam Neill in a 'bad guy' role for a change.
4 stars for me and that's only because, while I enjoyed the little twist at the end, I wasn't overly happy about the carnage at the end.

Daybreakers (Horror-Drama)

Basic premise: Set in a world where nearly everyone is a vampire and humans are farmed for blood, a blood-recession is occurring slowly turning those who cannot afford blood into monsters. It is up to hematologist, and ‘human empathiser’, Edward Dalton (Hawke) to find a blood substitute or possible cure.

Main cast: Ethan Hawke, Sam Niell, Willem Dafoe, Audrey Bennett, Isabel Lucas

My rating: 4.5 stars, this was a great concept and was carried out very well. It was good to watch a film that turned the vampire genre on its' head by showing us a world where vampires are the norm.

Target audience/rating: Sci-Fi and vampire movie lovers/4 stars

You’ll like this if you liked: Blade, Resident Evil (minus the action)
