Four out of Five stars
Running time: 87 mins

Inspired by the short film Two Cars, One Night, Taika Waititi brings together a great cast of New Zealanders to tell the story about a young boy living in Waihau Bay with his family and his goat.

What's it all about?
'Boy', real name Alamein, is an 11-year-old boy living in rural New Zealand in the magical year of 1984. Boy believes he will end up with the girl in his class called Chardonnay, that his father will take him to a Michael Jackson show, that his goat Leaf is awesome and that his brother Rocky, who has “super powers”, is an egg. Boy's imagination and ideas may seem different and unrealistic but there are multiple reasons why he lives a life of fantasy.

His father turns up one day after having left several years earlier, leading Boy to think he came back for him and Rocky. With his mates JuJu and Chuppa, Alamein really returns to dig up a stash of money he buried one day, only spending time with his kids because his mother told him to.

The Good
James Rolleston as Boy makes his mark on New Zealand as the naïve and innocent character, and shows that he has a potential future in film if he sticks to it. Taika Waititi shows his versatility to act and direct at the same time, as the unreliable and messed up father to Boy, Alamein Snr. The soundtrack is great, featuring NZ classic Poi E, as well as music from The Phoenix Foundation, all adding to a great Kiwiana-themed film which each New Zealander needs to see.

The Average
Parts of the story made the film seem much longer than it actually is, dragging it out unnecessarily. The stereotypes of JuJu and Chuppa seemed irrelevant as they were plays on the sort of 'Munter' character New Zealand is already familiar with. Leaf the goat saves the day, however.

Worth seeing?
If you're in the mood for a closer-to-home film, Boy is definitely worth seeing.
