When you hear that they're making a movie based on the battleship board-game but played out in 'real life' with real battleships, the first reaction you usually hear is a groan. I wholly admit, I was one of those people, but Battleship is one of those movies that is sure to surprise. Not only does it have some great action sequences but the way they work the premise into the movie is actually rather well done (considering what they had to work with).
The acting is average, a few of the one liners aren't too bad, but it's the moments they use and string together keeping the pacing good that make this an enjoyable movie.
There's aliens, great hunking battleships, carnage on a ship wide scale, and even a feel good story of a disabled veteran thrown in for good measure. The scene where they commandeer the USS Missouri (which for those of you who don't know is a battleship that was retired as a floating museum) is well done, and these scenes show a glimpse of just how primitive these ships were and what conditions the crew worked with.
This movie was a pleasant surprise and near the end I was thoroughly enthralled and rooting for our side.

Battleship
I will be honest when I saw the trailer for Battleship I was a bit disappointed. I thought “woohoo, a Liam Nesson action movie”. Then they just had to throw Aliens into the mix. After watching it I realised like a lot of films the trailer can be deceiving/off-putting. We really enjoyed Battleship.

For me, Battleship struck the perfect balance of action, comedy and a pretty good storyline. I also loved the fact that it was based on the Hasbro game Battleship.

Also, anyone that thinks sending information about Earth into deep space is a bad idea raise your hand! I loved the comment by Cal when they are about to turn the transmission on “"It will be like Columbus and the Indians, only we are the Indians".

What I loved:
- The preparation of the Missouri to go out and destroy the pesky aliens. Superbly done missing World War 2 veterans and a young naval team. And the music; perfect.
- Rihana was pretty cool. Go the gun-slinging chick!
- Awesome to see a New Zealander in this film. John Tui rocks it as Beast
- The aliens were eerily human

What I didn’t love was the part when the alien’s communication vessel crashed into China; was a little reminiscent of 9/11.

We enjoyed it. I think it is definitely worth seeing on the big screen as the action sequences are awesome!

Yes Battleship is cheesy, with some pretty wooden acting at times, but it is definitely enjoyable and worth seeing. Even the required reference to the board game it is (loosely) based on is entertaining. So recommended.
