Dallas Buyers Club Interview
Dallas Buyers Club Interview
Were there any clues about his sexuality in the diary? Obviously in the beginning of the film, he’s a very straight man and then there has been talk of him being bisexual.

Matthew McConaughey

There have been some things that have been written about. But I know what I read and the information I got from his diaries was that he was heterosexual and all the relationships that he wrote about were heterosexual. And he wrote about a bunch of them. There were a lot of Claires in Room 62 … [Laughs]
What effects did the weight loss have on your energy and concentration when you were putting in presumably long days filming? How did you find the reserves?

Matthew McConaughey

I’ve said this before, but the amount of energy I lost from the neck down, I gained from the neck up, which is sort of where Ron was generally coming from. I’ve seen people that were dying of HIV and cancer and the last thing to go is the neck, just scraping and just savaged from the neck up. Their bodies are withering away but they’re like a starving baby eagle in the nest, waiting for the worm.

So, in the filming, I had plenty of energy, I needed three hours less sleep a night. The other thing was that we did it in 25 days, we showed up and we were in the bubble. And we weren’t out of the bubble until somebody came up at the end and said, ‘Congratulations, we’ve wrapped.’ And I know my reaction was, ‘I’ll see you tomorrow,’ and they were like, ‘No there is no tomorrow, we’ve finished.’

And all of a sudden it was the first time that I looked up, it was the first time that Jared and I met, it was the first time that I met the whole crew because there wasn’t time inside it. So, the fact that there was a singular focus and there wasn’t a lot of stop and starts, there was no going back to the trailer or hang outs, we were just in it and that’s a different kind of fatigue than the anticipation of the stops and starts and exits and re-entries. That type of fatigue I get more tired from.
Matthew, after this film, you made The Wolf Of Wall Street …

Jared Leto

[Claps] I just saw it - holy shit. [Laughs] I didn’t see Dallas Buyers Club but you must be pretty good in this one because, I got to tell you, you were so good in that movie! [Laughs]

Matthew McConaughey

Thanks, man.
Did you think that you’d be making a film so soon after Dallas Buyers Club, Matthew? Obviously, you still hadn’t gained much weight.

Matthew McConaughey

No, I made The Wolf on Wall Street, whilst I was losing weight for Dallas Buyers Club. I was at 153 pounds for that and Marty asked me to press pause on the weight loss and I did for four days and went to New York to do that.
Can you describe the feeling of working with the dream team of Scorsese and DiCaprio together?

Matthew McConaughey

I think when you go work with people that are really good at what they do, you find that really there’s no secret magic trick that they have that’s different from anybody else’s. They just do the simple things really, really well and they’re confident enough to be free and open. My favourite set is when it’s so creatively open that you can steal from each other and the person being stolen from is actually more flattered than the person doing the stealing. You steal from each other and then you toss something back in the same scene.
Finally, you mention that it was quite a gruelling shoot over 25 days. Was it difficult to harness that chemistry in 25 days with no rest?

Matthew McConaughey

I didn’t find it difficult and ‘harness’ definitely wasn’t a word. And I didn’t feel like we were trying to hold on and be precious about anything - it was being creative, it was a living thing that was happening day by day and hour by hour. For me, as far as my relationship with Rayon, as I said, I didn’t meet Jared until the filming was over. I met Rayon each day with what he did with Rayon in each scene and so there was never a time, I was never able to get observational and voyeuristic.’ It was always just from a subjective eye and it was as if it was a living thing that was happening. That’s how I felt it was.
