3D Rereleases - Here to stay

3D is here to stay. I think that much is obvious. What's interesting about 3D releases of the past few years is that they haven't always been new movies. Sure there's been huge blockbusters like Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3, and even the highest grossing film of all time is a 3D movie (Avatar) but there have also been a raft of rereleases. I'm talking about movie studios releasing an old film again but "converted" into 3D.

Are they really that short on ideas? Have we really become that conditioned to franchises instead of stand-alone movies?

Just recently we had the 3D rereleases of Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Beauty and the Beast and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I'll be the first to admit, I loved the Toy Story rereleases, and to an extent Nightmare Before Christmas but I think a lot went wrong with Beauty and the Beast. It's not that it didn't look good but there was no added value to having an extra dimension chucked in there. Beauty is one of the most loved animated films of all time and if anything the constant change in perspective was a distraction to the story rather than adding to it.

So like it or not 3D is here to stay and inevitably so is the studio's obsession with rereleasing movies in 3D. Some are good ideas, some are bad. There are plans to release everything from the Harry Potter series to Yellow Submarine and WALL-E in 3D. Check out the list of currently scheduled 3D rereleases and decide for yourself whether they make sense.
