Before moving to the fine shores of Auckland I was part of a quiz team in Wellington. Tuesday nights at Four Kings bar were locked in our diary, only to be missed under exceptional circumstances (I even missed Grey’s for quiz – shocking). 

Our team, while initially modest competitors who favoured working our way through the bar snack menu (and enjoying 2-for-1 drinks, or was that just me?) actually knew a fair amount of random trivia, and began to work our way up the quiz ranks. Since my move to Auckland they have remained faithful quizzers (and win more often) and it is one of the things I have missed most.

Lucky for me, the past nine days have been spent driving around the Lower North Island on a work roadtrip (I lost count of how many times I heard the phrase “south of the Bombays”, “JAFA” and “ohhh….Auckland”) and I managed to nicely time my visit to Wellington with a Tuesday night, and once again joined ‘The Cheerios’ quiz team.

Now I should mention here, the Cheerio quizzers are no amateur quiz team. There is a spreadsheet that notes down scores each week and tracks which rounds they are statistically more likely to do well in, and a miniature whiteboard for teammates to write suggestions down – thus avoiding speaking and giving the answer away. This is how dedicated we are to quiz (though note both of these items came into existence after my move). 

Enjoying the atmosphere and company, I got quiz craving. So more than one year on, I’ve got some of my peeps together and on Tuesday night we’ll be quizzing at Mission Bay’s Reef Bar (it’s the new local and this here website said it was a good’un). While I doubt it will become as regular as the Wellington team, or we’ll do as well as The Cheerios – but as my flatmate said “so long as the beer’s cold it will be a good night.”  And if all else fails – and as school taught me, the answer is C.
