We really do live in a great city. Diverse, creative, aspirational - Auckland really is a cosmopolitan city that demands exploration.

At ViewAuckland.co.nz we like to think we've got a pretty good handle on what's on and worth doing so you guys can hopefully become inspired. But even we are surprised with some of the great 'distractions' that are literally under our noses.

A distraction worth undertaking came to light recently, and we think it's something well worth sharing.

As part of the Auckland Art Week, SKYCITY held an art tour around their respective venues looking at the extensive collection of New Zealand artwork on display to the general public.

The guide for the tour was SKYCITY’s art advisor Paul Baragwaneth and included works of art on display in the SKYCITY Grand Hotel, SKYCITY Hotel, Main Atrium and a ‘behind the doors’ view of Michael Hight’s Beehive painting on the 21st floor of the SKYCITY Grand Hotel.

SKYCITY has been adding to this collection ever since opening in 1996 and continue to do so. The artwork is both stunning and thought-provoking, and most importantly: accessible. Interested visitors simply need to head to the SKYCITY main atrium and request a 'Walk of Art' brochure and soak up one of New Zealand's very best collections.

Here's just a few images of the SKYCITY collection all kindly provided by photogapher Fraser Newman. Enjoy!
