Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go since I moved to Auckland but never quite got round to is the Classic Comedy bar. Last night I finally got around to it and I will definitely be back for more.

On Wednesday’s they have this “Big Wednesday” night, where newbie and pro comedians alike try out new material. It costs about $10 and you get 10 comedians trying to entertain you. It is hilarious.
Even the comedians that bomb are funny because, well, they bombed.
When I headed along last night, exhausted and feeling sorry for myself, I wasn’t sure I could be bothered heading in for two hours of tedious comedy, but by the end of the night I had a big grin on my face, cheeks hurting from laughter and vowing to come back.
The MC for the night was Urzila Carlson who was a pro at warming up the crowd and generally sensing which audience members wouldn’t mind having the piss taken of them (apart from one Colombian fellow who was looking less than impressed by the end of the night – oops!). Throughout the other comedians there were a few highlights and duds – but because it’s all about trying out new material the packed crowd were fully appreciative and in good humour. A few comedians were quite open about sucking, when a joke failed to impress declaring “ok, that’ll be funny when I re-write it!’’
Luckily I wasn’t singled out in the crowd once, and it ended up being the perfect date night for the plus one and I, rounding out the night with dinner at Kura Japanese Sake Bar and a walk along the waterfront.
In conclusion, go to the Classic. You’ll have a blast (plus they have two bars).
I love comedy but it sounds like you, I hate being singled out...I nearly got the shock of my life when I was called up stage at last years Heath Franklin Chopper show...very tough!!!
